I believe wheel building should be a calming methodical process with a quantifiable sense of achievement. Eliminating common frustrating situations is always going to be a positive.

In this tutorial I share a pro tip explaining the difference in spoke tension in a dished wheel. The difference in tension on each side corelates to how much adjustment is necessary to move the rim a specified amount. We'll visit the classroom and then I'll show you what I am talking about in a jig.

Understanding this will make your wheel building and truing quicker, easier and more accurate. It certainly made a massive difference to my wheel building once I understood the affects my adjustments would make relative to the side of the wheel I was working on.

I first realised what was going on through the process of initial dishing, trying to get the last bit of movement from the rim to get it in the middle.

Learn how to build your own wheels successfully and you will get a great sense of satisfaction and achievement. On top of that you'll have the best upgrade your bike will ever get which will continue to put a smile on your face mile after mile. A skill that keeps on giving!

Let me know if there are any wheel building pro tips you would like to learn more about. I can't remember everything I know about wheel building. It is just something I do subconsciously these days, so a bit of prompting will jog my memory so I can share it with the wheel building community.

As always, if you are in doubt or don't feel confident about your bike maintenance, go and speak to a professional bike mechanic.
