Togo's New Constitution a Plot to Keep President Gnassingbé in Power? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Togo adopted a new constitution on Monday. They changed the government from a presidential to a parliamentary system. Togolese people will no longer be able to elect a president. Togo's president will now hold a ceremonial position and the president will be selected by parliament for a single, six-year term. On the face of it, this seems like a way to ensure that president Faure Gnassingbé does not extend his grip on power. The Gnassingbé family has ruled Togo continuously for 57 years. So the constitution could put Togo on a more democratic path. But the opposition in Togo says the new constitution is an eyewash. They say it is a way to help Faure Gnassingbé continue his reign.
