The 1950 Italian GP was the final race of the inaugural Formula 1 season. The previous races, with the exception of the Indy 500 which Alfa Romeo did not attend, had all been won by 2 Alfa drivers, Fangio and Farina.

The 3 regular Alfa Romeo drivers turned up in Monza for the final race of the season with the mathematical chance to win the title.
