Probably one of the more common questions I get asked as a Master Plumber is “should my plumbing pipes/drains have water 💧 💦 in them all the time?” The answer is yes and also no.
In this #youtubevideo you will see me explain scenarios where the #water is always meant to be inside a #drainpipe to create a water seal eliminating the sewer gases entering the property and also scenarios where the drains are not meant to always hold water and if they do it probably means you have a blocked pipe! Typically a plumbing pipe which is shaped like a U bend will be designed to always have water in it. As you will see in the video I show two types of U bends or as we refer to them S traps and P traps. These fittings will typically be found under a hand basin, under a kitchen sink and under a laundry sink. In commercial applications you may find them under a sluice sink, under a bar sink or in a plant room taking discharge from hot water service and air conditioning condensate drain lines. As I also mention in the video majority of bathrooms, commercial kitchens and change rooms will also have a grate in the middle of the room to take any floor water and this grate will also have a trap below it also known as a floor trap or floor waste gully. The sizes of these pipes varies from 40mm for a hand basin and 50mm for kitchen sink through to 80mm and 100mm for in ground floor traps.
