NEW TO AAC: PARENT TIPS AND TRICKS FOR SELECTING AND SETTING UP AN AAC DEVICE

In my member's only video that you will see available after joining, learn how to : set up your device by altering accessibility, auto-lock screen time and guided access. Select a WordPower Core board that is age-appropriate with plenty of room to grow and change the voice to match what your child sounds like. Set up a password on the edit menu screen to limit accidental changes. Copy your child's core word power board set up and rename it in order to add/change any buttons on the screen. Lock the screen by enabling guided access with a passcode. Delete all other apps on the ipad. Use this device for communication ONLY. This is now your child's/client's voice.

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for successfully getting started with AAC:

Modeling @aacapps

#1: Get a durable, flexible CASE with a strap AND Screen protector. Do NOT use this device for anything other than your child's AAC app. Take it with you EVERYWHERE for 1 week as your step one.

Light-Tech (or Low-tech) AAC for carryover and/or to begin using core boards and Alternative Augmentative Communication.

SNUG = Spontaneous Novel Utterance Generation is the GOAL of AAC.

#2: Interact connect and build relationships with your child using AAC devices and THEIR interests through music, song, dances, and their favorite interests.

#3: Model without expectation. Model the words for your child. Use the FIND button under ABC 123 to show the motor pattern

#4: Use Double Core Words (i.e. Put up, or Work Out) to shoe multiple meanings

When do I know my child is ready to change core vocabulary = when you are continuously unable to find words that are in your child's vocabulary or interests. OR when there is a need for increased grammatical morphemes (i.e. "ED, ING" ) in which you can change to the higher level of grammar using the same vocab board.
