The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class was once quite a beast, believe it or not. While it has gained a reputation as a boulevardier preferred by yuppies and Real Housewives in recent decades, it debuted in 1954 as a street-legal version of a race car that had just won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Nurburgring. The 300 SL Gullwing was a dynamo of a sports car for its time, but the 1957 version would be the actual founder of the SL breed: a lovely convertible with a large Three-Pointed Star on the front.

So, in 2022, Mercedes is giving the SL-Class a second shot to recover its former glory — or at the very least, some of its sports car credentials. The new model, code-named R232, is larger than the previous model, but its compact proportions make it appear smaller – and, more crucially, faster. That fits in perfectly with the rest of the changes Mercedes made with the new model, including changes to the SL-philosophy Class's aimed at making it more appealing to individuals who buy convertibles for the fun of driving rather than to be seen in.

What is the impact of this shift in mindset in the real world? We climbed into a 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL63 for a full day of driving and posing around our neighborhood.
