What Does Your Transmission Do?
Simply put, your transmission is how your car changes gear while driving. A gearbox moves gears to different levels to send power to the wheels helping the car move forward or backward. Your car’s gear is determined by how fast you are going and how much power you require. The way a transmission works is quite simple, Torque from your engine goes into the transmission by the input shaft, goes through the gears, and comes out of the output shaft.

What is Manual Transmission (MT)?
The manual transmission is operated by the driver by shifting the gear lever and the clutch pedal, along with the acceleration pedal, to send power from the engine to the gearbox, which then sends power to the wheels. It is a hand-operated gear lever and is quite common on roads, and most of the cars you may have seen are essential with manual transmission.

On the other hand, manual transmissions give the driver control over which gear the car will be in at any given moment. Lower gears utilize more torque and operate at lower speeds, while higher gears use less torque and operate for longer at faster speeds.

Cars with a manual transmission have a clutch pedal next to the brake that must be depressed when not accelerating or maintaining a speed with the accelerator pedal. When changing gears, the clutch pedal is depressed so that the clutch can move into the new desired gear.

What is Automatic Transmission (AT)?
You do not have to manually change the gears in an automatic car. The gearbox's mechanism works so that the car will change the gears automatically without the driver having to use either the gear lever or the clutch. Since these cars are easier to use, you may have seen many automatic cars on the roads today.

Within automatic transmissions, there are actually two types: traditional and dual-clutch.

Traditional automatic is a type of automatic transmission connected to the car’s engine by a torque converter. The vehicle controls when to shift gears with this transmission, and the driver has no input or control. The car will monitor certain parameters to determine when to shift gears, such as speed, throttle pedal position, and engine revolutions.

What is Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)?
The CVT gearbox comes with a single gear that is variable in nature and uses a pulley or belt to shift speeds. Many hybrid cars have a CVT gearbox, which is known to improve their mileage because of its mechanism. Most car manufacturers of traditional manual cars are now coming up with models and variants with a CVT gearbox.
