In September 1985 Mercedes-Benz combined power and aesthetic appeal on the highest level: the new luxury 560 SEC coupé premiered at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main, where the Stuttgart brand presented the facelifted saloons and coupés of the 126 model series along with the top engine. The elegant high-end two-door model is regarded today as being one of the most successful designs ever created under the direction of long-standing Mercedes-Benz chief designer Bruno Sacco. The 560 SEC was powered – just as the S-Class 560 SE saloon – by the 5.6-liter M 117 E 56 V8 engine with 200 kW (272 hp; with catalytic converter 178 kW/242 hp). In 1987 Mercedes-Benz launched higher-performing V8 engines in the 126 model series, meaning the 560 SEC then had 220 kW (300 hp) and with a catalytic converter 205 kW (279 hp). Based on the largest and most expensive Mercedes coupe, the 560 SEC AMG 6.0 Widebody with a three-point star was unsurpassed in luxury, performance, and exclusivity. The standard 5.6-liter V8 engine was increased to 6.0 liters by the wizards of Affalterbach. AMG's talented mechanics also equipped the V8 with a custom-built four-valve, double top camshaft, and three-component cast cylinder heads. It developed 385 hp. (380 hp) at 5500 rpm and 410 lb-ft (555 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm transmitted to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. With 80 extra horsepower and twice the torque at half the original engine speed, the 560 SEC AMG 6.0 Widebody was a beast capable of absorbing an autobahn with a top speed of over 285 km/h (177 mph). Acceleration 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) is less than 6 seconds.
