The Tonale is more than a new Alfa, it's a new kind of Alfa. You see, the Italian firm has built its reputation over the years on being exotic and exciting (not always with brilliant results, it has to be said), but in a modern age of heightened social responsibility, that passion has to be tempered with a little bit of pragmatism. As such, the Tonale - Alfa's all-new compact SUV that'll go up against the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Jaguar E-Pace - is being launched in hybrid form only, with a plug-in hybrid on the horizon shortly after, ahead of the brand going 100% fully electric by 2027.

Not that that exotic element has been ditched altogether, mind you. The new car has the usual Alfa glamour in terms of its looks, and it certainly stands apart from its rather conservative rivals. But can it compete with those rivals in other areas?

To find out, Vicky Parrott travels to the car's international press launch in Lake Como, Italy, to get the lowdown on its quality, technology, practicality, running costs and what it's like to drive.
