What used to be an understated super saloon is now a track focused weapon, but is the new M5 really that much better than the V8-powered M550i?

There's no denying the M5 Competition is the more hardcore of he two. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 626hp and 750Nm of torque, which is sent to all-four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. 0-62mph only takes 3.3 seconds, which is immensely fast but the M550i isn't far behind. It too has a 4.4-litre V8, only power dips to 530hp while torque remains the same at 750Nm. It'll complete a 0-62mph sprint in 3.8 seconds, but crucially it's £35,000 more expensive than the M5 Comp. So is the true M car really worth the premium?
