Hybrids are often seen as a sensible stepping stone to full electrification, mating efficiency with the flexibility of a combustion engine. And in the world of luxurious performance SUVs, few offerings are as sensible as the 2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid. Updates for the new model year keep it at the leading edge, delivering incredible performance and green cred in one attractively styled package.

Powered Glory
Under the hood is a potent plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with an electric motor for a robust 463 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. That's enough muscle to hustle the Cayenne to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 158 mph. But what's even more impressive is the efficiency – Porsche estimates 188 mpg combined and just 33 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer.

The E-Hybrid can travel up to 46 miles on electric power alone, nearly double the range of the outgoing model. When relying on the gasoline engine, expect over 400 miles of range from the 75-liter fuel tank. Using an 11 kW charger, the battery can replenish in just over two hours.

Supreme Dynamics
Performance and efficiency only tell part of the story, however. As with all Porsches, the Cayenne's real party piece is how it drives. Despite its size and hybridefficiency, the Cayenne E-Hybrid carries itself with fantastic road manners thanks to innovative chassis technologies like available rear-axle steering and adaptive air suspension.

Even with the standard fixed dampers on our test car, the Cayenne displayed remarkable poise through curves with beautifully weighted steering. Optional air suspension would only enhance the experience by providing buttery ride quality with the ability to increase ground clearance for modest off-roading.

Appropriately Premium
Like the driving experience, the Cayenne's cabin ambiance is appropriately premium for its $79,800 starting price (not including options like the $1,760 air suspension). High-quality materials abound, and the latest tech features include a slick 12.6-inch digital gauge cluster. The design takes some influence from the all-electric Taycan, likely foreshadowing the Cayenne's eventual transition to a fully electric powertrain around 2026.

The one notable omission is a third row – the Cayenne remains a two-row, five-seater. But with up to 1,563 liters of maximum cargo space, it's no less practical than most midsize luxury SUVs.

A Smart Choice
The 2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid continues the model's long tradition of blending sensibility with performance in a stylish and premium package. It's thrifty yet quick, buttoned-down but engaging to drive, and loaded with the latest tech and amenities. For shoppers seeking a luxurious performance SUV that doesn't sacrifice efficiency, few options make as much sense as the new Cayenne E-Hybrid.
