The Arab Spring never took hold in Algeria back in 2011. But in recent months, millions of Algerians engaged in street protests and called for the ouster of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The peaceful demonstrations succeeded in ending Bouteflika’s 20 year reign, but Algerians want to purge the whole corrupt system – the so-called “pouvoir.” Lou explains how the ruling elite took control of Africa’s largest nation, and the challenges that lay ahead.
