If the Netflix miniseries Self Made was your introduction to Madam CJ Walker, then it was also loosely your introduction to Annie Turnbo Malone. And I have to say that neither portrayal did justice to either of those women. So in this video, I’m going to reintroduce them both to you, and go more deeply into the life of Annie Turnbo Malone, who is never discussed quite enough in my opinion.
Both women became millionaires in the 1910’s - each selling her own brand of hair care products. Both women are to be celebrated. But a lot more people are familiar with the name and story of Madam CJ Walker, who is known as the first black millionaire and the first woman to become a self-made millionaire.
Before her time, there were certainly white women who were millionaires, but it was because of inherited wealth - usually from a husband or father.
And often when the name Madam CJ Walker is getting some praise, there’s a group of people (usually who are from St Louis) angrily asking, “but what about Annie Turbo Malone?” I understand the questioning as much as I hate it. I’ll explain why a little later.
But more than anything, today, I want to honor both of them, talk about their similarities, and their differences. For example, they both married men who they basically employed. A similarity. BUT while Madam CJ Walker married a man who was a newspaper advertising salesman, and therefore could and did help her to elevate her business...Annie Turnbo Malone married a man who had been a teacher, and she elevated him to the office of President of her company.
He was not qualified to run her business in the capacity that was required of him. And when he divorced her in 1927, she paid DEARLY…which is why I say…that although a picture has been painted that calls out Madam CJ Walker as Annie Turnbo Malone’s rival, her REAL rival was her husband, Aaron Eugene Malone. Annie Turnbo was sleeping with the enemy.
