On 12 April 1996, Prince Edward spoke to ITN's Nicholas Owen about a new documentary produced by the prince's TV production company, Ardent Productions, on the life of King Edward VIII, later the Duke of Windsor. During the conversation, Prince Edward was invited to compare the experience of Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee whom Edward abdicated the throne in order to marry, and Diana, Princess of Wales, who was in the process of divorcing Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. The Queen's youngest son spoke of the differences between the cases, highlighting the unique circumstances that the country faced during Edward VIII's abdication crisis of 1936. Edward also discussed the former King's alleged Nazi sympathies, putting the King's views in the context of widespread support for a policy of appeasement, and arguing that he found no evidence of collaboration between the Duke of Windsor and Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime.
