When you think of epic and extremely popular movie franchises, you think trilogies: Star Wars, The Dark Knight, Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, The Godfather. It's just natural for a huge story to come in three parts, whether it's planned that way from the start or it just turns out that way.

Given how Hollywood works, though, it's a wonder there are as many trilogies as there are. Making one successful movie is hard enough. Making three is a Herculean task. So it's no surprise that some franchises that were intended to have three parts called it quits after two, even if there were plans for a third installment.
