This is it…the pinnacle…the most excessive Wrangler in history.
THIS is the Jeep, Wrangler, Rubicon…392…
Of course the party-piece of this Wrangler is what’s lurking under the hood.
Lying in wait is a naturally aspirated 6.4L V8 spewing 470 hp and 470 lbft
It’s got a ZF 8 speed gearbox and automatic 4WD
And 0-60 is done in 4.5 seconds…
Yes, it’s got the V8 now and it’s fast, but this is still a Wrangler which means anywhere that’s not paved, it’s terrible to drive..
It’s body on frame and they softened the rear suspension so it wallows about
It’s got a solid rear axle, solid front axle, and recirculating ball steering which means it’s so opposed to going straight that Stellantis couldn’t even fit lane keep assist
And of course at highway speeds it’s loud and could blow over in a stiff wind because it has worse aerodynamics than a Bulbasaur
HOWEVER, and I say this with incredible confidence, this is the best vehicle to ever bear the Jeep logo…
This is the perfect illustration of how you can take an objectively terrible car and give it one really good thing and all of the sudden you forget any fault it has…
Terrible fuel economy? V8.
Horrific steering and driving on the road? V8.
Generally uncomfortable? WHO THE F*** CARES
This 6.4L engine and more specifically the performance exhaust turn this Wrangler from something I would never entertain owning into something I feel like I need.
This Rubicon 392 is tree splittingly-loud and rabi chipmunk fast, but by no means is it a sports SUV
It’s over 5100 lbs and it’s got a ladder frame
The suspension, while not the Fox dampers, are tuned for articulation and offroading
The solid front axle is good for that same thing and that’s it, and just keeping it on the road is a chore
The transmission, while a ZF 8 speed unit isn’t what i would call sharp or sporty
All of that is essentially to say that, while it has a big engine and it’s fast, it’s by no means sporty.
After all it’s still a Wrangler, adn a Rubicon at that so it’s mission is not found on suburban streets
Let’s meet up with Paolo to talk details and send it where it’s a littlemore at home…
Take in the vehicle (sadie hates it so that’s how I know it’s a good car)
Love the spec here (white paint, black and bronze accents)
Extreme recon package (17 inch bronze wheels, 35 inch BFG KO2s)
Gold recovery hooks, steel bumper, power dome hood
Obviously lift, big tires, but from the side it’s fairly incognito
Around back you get the quad exhaust and my god
Far and away the best looking Wrangler Ive ever seen - incredible spec
It’s a Wrangler…and it’s almost $85,000
Does it feel like an 85k interior? No, but you’re paying for the engine and the sound
It’s reasonably comfy, but not for LONG trips, it’s fatiguing to drive on the highway
You do get a Uconnect 5 system which is quite good, but the bluetooth doesnt work
Digital cluster, ACP, AA, and so on
You get adaptive cruise, but no lane keep like we did in the GC
The rear seat is adequate, but not spacious or lux
The trunk is decent size, but not massive
But of course, the charm comes from the roof and doors
This is still a Wrangler and more importantly it still says Rubicon on the side of the hood so let’s recap what that gets you…
Of course you get a traditional body on frame architecture
You get a 2 speed transfer case and a 4X4 system
Interestingly, though you get 4WD auto which is really nice for bad weather condition on the road
You get 17 inch beadlock capable wheels so you can air WAY down if needed
You have upgraded 35 inch BFG KO2 tires which are great
You don’t have the Fox suspension, but the articulation is still very good
Especially since you can still disconnect your sway bars
With the lift and tires you get almost 13 inches of ground clearance
a 47 degree approach angle
Over a 40 degree departure angle
And almost a 27 degree breakover angle
Water fording is also improved to 33 and a half inches
And finally, you can lock your front and rear diffs
So all that is a lot of numbers and specs and while it’s impressive, let’s see how it actually comes together….
