In small babies, the response to hearing is of course difficult to notice. It could be a blinking or pause during feeds, a startle with loud noise. It is important to offer stimuli which produce sound without visual stimulation or vibration (like banging on the bed). Over time, response matures, and babies start localising sound in front first (4-6 months), to side by 6-7 months and vertically only by 8-9 months. Do review the hearing screen on your baby, and if concerns persist, better to do an ENT assessment before 2 months so we can diagnose hearing loss by 3 months (which is the target of newborn hearing screen).
