Of all the characters throughout the Star Wars roster, few embody the rage and desire for revenge like the Dathomirian Zabraak Maul; whether revenge against the Jedi Order (as seen in the Phantom Menace), or revenge against Obi-Wan Kenobi for his role in the Duel of the Fates. And, for many, it wasn’t exactly clear why wanted revenge against the Jedi. Maul had very few lines in the Phantom Menace, behaving almost more like a presence than an actual character. The only insight he gives on his desires and motivations is that he wants revenge on the Jedi. But, revenge for what? After all, as far as the Jedi are concerned the sith have been extinct for a millenium. Looking into Maul’s backstory, you might expect to find some deep-seated childhood tragedy for which Maul could blame the Jedi, but upon closer inspection: that isn’t the case either. So what is the real reason that Maul wanted revenge against the Jedi Order?
