More than £100 million has been paid out in damages by one hospital trust over 10 years after its maternity units were accused of being responsible for dozens of deaths and stillbirths.

Channel 4 News can reveal that just weeks before the stillbirth of one baby, which has now been investigated, the Care Quality Commission, found that Mid and South Essex NHS Trust did not always have enough staff to keep women safe - while staff did not identify and escalate safety concerns appropriately.

This is the latest in a long line of maternity scandals and comes amid increasing calls for an independent inquiry into the way babies are born.
