Here is the raw footage for “Lose That Long Face” from “A Star Is Born” featuring Judy Garland, Monette Moore, and a couple of quick appearances of director George Cukor.

Note that much of the footage is silent. I added the corresponding music/vocals where appropriate.

The clips are as follows:
1) Part of the deleted middle section, showing “Vicki” (Judy) going through the pottery studio and then begging to go into the dance break that’s in the film.

2) A short take of Judy with the two kids.

3) An alternate take of the ending of the song.

4) The black and white footage of an alternate version of the pottery studio segment. This time, instead of going into the dance break, “Vicki” keeps going, does a quick dance with the two kids, then ends up on the loading dock for the end of the number. This indicates that a shorter version of the number (without the big dance break and the dance with the two kids on the loading dock - but WITH the Monette Moore duet and the pottery studio bit) was tried out. Since there is no corresponding audio for that segue I cheated a bit of the music from what we have. Most of the last chorus is deleted judging from the choreography here and how it compares to the final film. Judy goes into the last bit of the song with “Don’t give in to a frown…” before the cut.

5) Some silent bits and pieces of footage, including a color alternate shot of part of the black and white short ending segment noted in $4 above. It couldn’t be spliced into the B&W footage because it’s too short and is a completely different take that doesn’t fit. If it were a longer take that might have made a difference.

6) Two separate pieces of B&W footage of an abandoned idea for the end of the sequence. Judging from these two takes of the same scene, director George Cukor planned to show Vicki finishing the number then walking through all of the activity on the soundstage to her dressing room, which would have cut to her big dramatic scene with Oliver Niles. This would have shown the audience how busy and hectic making movies could be. At the end of the takes we see Vicki going to her dressing room with her assistants/make up lady. Cukor is seen at the end of both walking into the frame to give some directions.

The second take is amusing as this time the extra with the piano almost hits Judy, but she continues on with the scene. Cukor appears and heads right over to that extra. One wonders just what he said! :)

7) The unedited SINGLE TAKE of a big stretch of the number going from Judy’s singing with the two kids on the loading dock all the way to just after her duet with Monette Moore. In the finished film, the scenes with the two kids on the loading dock are edited. This, as noted, is one single take.

A huge thanks to Histato M for obtaining and sharing this extra footage with us, to Rick Smith for sharing his rare playback disc, and to John H. Haley for his great restoration of the playback disc.
