After Carlie watched her two year old take his breath, she later became pregnant again and suffered from severe prenatal depression. So much so, that she knew the thoughts were intrusive enough to compel her to check into the psychiatric unit at the hospital. She said it was a horrible experience and she couldn’t get out of there fast enough. She was judged by other medical personnel for BEING a medical personnel and told she should know better. Man it hurt to hear that. Post partum depression doesn’t discriminate. It strikes anytime, anywhere. It came on for me harder on some babies than on others, and it’s hard not to totally self deprecate after having those thoughts. 💭 Moms are SO hard on themselves. And in the thick of postpartum? It’s a death sentence. Every mother can relate to this experience, whether it was a mild case of the baby blues, or full blown postpartum depression requiring medication. Proud of @carliethemidwife for reaching out to the @the_emily_effect for help and resources and being willing to talk openly about this. What’s so fascinating is that Carlie is a midwife and informs her patients about everything that can happen in postpartum. It’s different when it’s you. I would venture to say it could be worse for women who have suffered trauma not long before they are pregnant. Is that fair nurses and docs? Or does trauma not have any correlation? Either way, Carlie got through it, and delivered Tatum, who had a heart defect. Like how much can one Mom take? Carlie is full of grit and I’m honored to know her. #grittymama#postpartumdepression#suicide#cancer#childhoodcancer
