For the 2019 model year, Toyota has facelifted the Prius, giving the hybrid a cleaner look. It won't win any beauty contests but we chalk the redesign up as a win. Aside from the new looks, the biggest change for 2019 is the addition of a new AWD-e system. This optional drivetrain brings AWD traction to the Prius for the first time ever. Now, you can drive a Prius in inclement weather such as snow. We flew to Wisconsin to test the car in some man-made snow and the system does really work, even when equipped with eco tires. The AWD-e system uses an electric motor to power the rear wheels on launch, then when necessary at speeds of up to 43 mph. The main benefit of this system is stellar fuel economy figures of 52/48/50 mpg city/highway/combined. This is only two mpg less than the FWD model, so there is a very small sacrifice for choosing AWD.
