The Maratha Confederacy was one of the largest and most powerful empires in all of 'Hindustan,' or India. They controlled massive swathes of the continent and fought multiple wars against the British East India Company. By the late 18th Century, however, they were not a nation at the height of their power. Central authority was devolving and their military relied increasingly on foreign mercenaries. Still, one contemporary would describe the Maratha infantry and artillery as "Astonishing" and warn the British of their imposing presence on the battlefield. As the British would soon see, they were not a foe to be underestimated. In this video I discuss the broad background of the Maratha military structure and go into the details of their infantry, artillery, and cavalry.
