While Steam had all but vanished from American mainline railroads in the 1950's, geared locomotives were still active in the woods in Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties, California. However, like the steam locomotives on the high iron, the end was near for the logging railroads. After more than half a century of men shouting voices, of sawblades singing, of tall trees crashing, of steam whistles calling, the Sierras were quiet again.
