In the Chinese province of Guangdong, widespread river flooding is expected, threatening millions of people.
Major rivers, waterways and reservoirs in China's Guangdong province threaten to cause dangerous flooding, forcing the government on Sunday to introduce emergency response plans to protect more than 127 million people.
South China's Guangdong province faces a serious flood risk, with water levels in the Bei River forecast to peak at 37.3 m (122 ft) in the early hours of April 22, 2024. The event, considered a "once in a century" event, comes after record rainfall hit the region, affecting millions of people.
The province, a major exporter and one of China's main commercial and trade hubs, experienced days of heavy rainfall and strong winds, affecting weather conditions that also affected other parts of China.
The 12-hour torrential rain that began at 8 pm on Saturday hit the central and northern parts of the province, including the cities of Zhaoqing, Shaoguan, Qingyuan and Jiangmen, where rescuers were dispatched.
More than 45,000 people were evacuated from Qingyuan and some power facilities in Zhaoqing were damaged, causing power outages in some places, according to state media.
The National Meteorological Center said between 200 mm (7.9 inches) and 350 mm (13.8 inches) of rain had fallen in the affected regions since early April.
