Scientists have discovered a new source of water on the moon's surface, embedded in microscopic glass beads. The Chinese Chang'e 5 rover, which spent two weeks on the moon in 2020, collected samples containing these beads. The beads, formed millions of years ago due to asteroid impacts and volcanic activity, contain water resulting from a chemical reaction between oxygen in the beads and hydrogen atoms from solar winds. Although the amount of water in each bead is tiny, there are enough beads on the moon to contain an estimated 71 trillion gallons of water. This discovery could help future astronauts produce drinking water, breathable air, and even rocket fuel.
