हमन हैं इश्क मस्ताना
हमन को होशियारी क्या?

I’m drunk on love
Why be clever anymore?

These striking words of Kabir acquired a special piquancy at the World Social Forum in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2006, at a small and vibrant gathering which many of us from India had travelled with great difficulty to join. Singer Shafi Muhammad Faqir wove Kabir into an intimate fabric of poetry together with Sufi poets from Sindh while the audience participated with evident familiarity and joy. Those 'drunk on love' perceived the truth of what Shafi Sahab said during this recording, "The spiritual everywhere has the same school of thought, same axis, same destination ... only the ways of expression are different."

This popular song of Kabir is composed in his own style by Shafi Sahab, a beautiful Sufi singer from Umarkot, Sindh, who sings in a folk yet highly classical idiom, bringing home the voices of Kabir and several Sufi poets in Sindhi, Punjabi, Urdu, Siraiki and other languages. He belongs to the deeply musical Manganiar community that inhabits both sides of the border between India and Pakistan.
