Meet 77-year-old freshman Martha Brown. 💙 Read her story in the upcoming issue of Longwood Magazine, arriving in mailboxes soon.

In 1959, following the Brown v. Board of Education decision banning segregation, Prince Edward County closed its public schools.

The schools were closed for five years, longer than anywhere else in America, impacting the education and lives of countless students... including Martha Brown.

Eventually, Martha settled in Baltimore, built a career and raised a family. In 2021, she retired to Prince Edward. In 2023, she enrolled at Longwood on a Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship.
