This special episode highlights some of the edible fish and plants available along the Maine coast during an overnight sailing and camping trip to a small island on the Sheepscot River, near Boothbay Harbor. It all starts when a group of close friends hatch a plan to sail their small boat to a rugged, unpopulated island and prepare a meal made entirely from local, sustainably grown and harvested plants, fish and shellfish. Before departing, they visit Mere Point Oyster Company to learn how oysters are farmed and how they serve to clean the local waters. It's followed by a lesson on how to shuck an oyster, After that, the group stops by a local farm stand to buy organic eggs and produce before heading out to dive for wild sugar kelp. The next day, they load up the sailboat with food and gear, but before leaving the dock they take a few minutes to catch some mackerel on small jigs. These too will figure prominently in their island meal. After gathering their sustainably grown and harvested ingredients, the group sets a course for Ram Island, part of the Maine Island Trail. They unload their gear, make camp, and prepare an amazing meal of fresh oysters in a homemade mignonette sauce, grilled mackerel, and squash. And of course, some local ale to toast a successful trip.
