Claude Shannon's paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" revolutionized the world of computing and information processing. His work also inspired Richard Dawkins to see the gene as an information carrying system, where the information can be thought of separately from the physical medium which contains that information.

Information can be described as "the reduction of uncertainty" or "that which can be transferred from one system to another".
