2015 Porsche 911 GT3 (991.1) Review, Walkaround, In-depth Tour, and Test Drive

Porsche may be a staple luxury car brand that most people hear about today, and if cars aren't exactly your passion, then chances are, you would associate the Porsche brand with the likes of the Macan, and the Cayenne which has seen a surge of sales in the past decade or so. Before the rise of the SUV craze though, there was one single word that not only built, but also cemented Porsche's name in the automotive world, and it wasn't even a word. It was three digits stuck beside each other: 911.

The 911 always been air-cooled, and that was part of its charm, so its not surprising that it received an abundance of criticisms when Porsche pulled the plug on the air-cooled 911s, and instead started an evolution, replacing it with a far more modern water cooled design first seen in the 996 body in 1996. In 2012, Porsche decided to take it a step further and started the second major evolution of the 911 with the release of this one right here: The 911 GT3 991 body.

The 991 GT3 is the first 911 to be offered with a multitude of changes arguably fit for 21st century motoring. The most notable of which include an electronically assisted power steering system, deletion of the option to get a manual transmission, and 4 wheel steering. These changes drew flak from the car community, saying that the 991 911 is no longer a true 911, and that the last true 911 was the 997. These arguments and reactions are valid, however, we must remember that similar reactions were garnered with the introduction of water cooled 911s just over two decades ago, and yet, the 911 remained to be a prime choice for a 10 year old's bedroom poster.

Today, we take this pre-facelift 991.1 911 GT3 with its 3.8L naturally aspirated Flat Six engine producing 475 horsepower that revs all the way to a bone-shaking 9000 RPM mated to a blazingly quick 7-speed dual clutch PDK out for a spin to prove that Porsche has not lost its touch, and of course to also prove that it may divide opinion among petrolheads, but the 911 with its unmistakable rear-engine rear wheel drive layout that has been largely unchanged for the past 60 years is still the quintessential Porsche to get.
