OLD used motor oil mixed with 25-50% thinner( diesel, paint thinner, mineral spirits, etc) for spraying. Or just straight for hand applying.

FAQ
Smell: It smells like oil for a day or two in passing. Which isn't strong or offensive odor to the majority of people.

Durability: I find it last longer than commercial translucent outdoor stains due the high oil content.

Protects: Insects and other animals leave it alone.
