4 tablespoons butter, room temperature, divided
1/2 yellow onion, chopped
2/3 pound ground chuck
2 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
4 slices American cheese
4 slices rye bread
6 tablespoons Thousand Island dressing

1.Preheat griddle to medium-high.

2.Melt 1 tablespoon butter on griddle. Add onions, toss to coat with the butter, season with 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper and cook until caramelized.

3.Combine ground chuck with 2 teaspoons garlic salt and 1 teaspoon black pepper. Shape into 2 patties. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter on griddle and cook the patties in the melted butter until well caramelized. When the patties are flipped, top with caramelized onion and 2 slices of cheese each, cover with a metal bowl and cook until the cheese is melted and the burger is cooked through, about 8 minutes total.

4.While the patties are cooking, toast one side of the bread in 1 tablespoon melted butter. Spread Thousand Island dressing on the untoasted side of the bread and top with patty.
