For many homeowners, green grass during the summer creates the ideal lawn, perfect for a backyard get-together. But with factors like heat, drought, and pests, lawns can become patchy, faded, and even yellow, so in this video, we’ll go over a few quick tips you can use to help get green grass this summer and keep it throughout the season.

When it comes to growing green grass over the warm summer months, you’ll need to determine when your turf actually grows the strongest. Depending on where you live in the US, your lawn can consist of either warm-season turf, cool-season turf, or a mix of both. If you live in the southern portion of the United States, then your turf should consist of warm-season grasses. If you live in the northern portion of the US, then your turf should consist of cool-season grasses. It’s important to be able to distinguish when your lawn’s growing season is. With that information, you’ll be better equipped to plan your lawn care routine for the entire year.

As the heat gets more intense, you’ll need to match it with the proper watering application to combat stress and loss of color. The best thing to do throughout the summer is to deeply water your lawn with an inch of water once a week. You’ll want to water during the morning to avoid the summer heat from evaporating the water later in the day. By properly watering your lawn, you’ll drive your turf’s roots deeper into the ground, strengthening your grass and encouraging greener growth.

During the hot summer months, your lawn will be under stress from heat, moisture, and insect activity. To help reduce these stresses, be sure to mow your lawn tall. This creates a canopy of shade that will provide relief from the heat of the sun. As you mow your lawn, leave the grass clippings where they fall. These clippings will provide more shade, significantly reducing the heat stress your grass experiences. Over time, the grass clippings will break down and release its nutrients back into the soil, providing natural fertilization.

The start of a hot summer makes it a great time to start fertilizing your lawn if you aren’t already doing so. The nutrients a good fertilizer will provide will not only boost your lawn’s health, but it will also help your grass grow greener without excessive growth. If you’re on the market for a good fertilizer this summer, try our Pro Grow Summer Blend 19-4-10 Fertilizer. Pro Grow is packed with the essential nutrients needed to keep lawns and turf healthy and strong during the hot summer months. This fertilizer is especially well suited for southern, warm-season grasses.

With the summer heat, you’re sure to experience increased pest activity. You’ll need to keep a closer eye out for the pests underneath your lawn: grubs. Grubs are typically active in the summer and will feed on the roots of your grass and foliage causing extensive damage to the root system and causing brown patches to form in your turf.

To treat grubs in your lawn, we recommend you use a liquid insecticide that contains the active ingredient Imidacloprid. The imidacloprid will soak into the soil and kill grubs underground. If you’re looking for a good product that contains imidacloprid, check out Dominion 2L.
Apply Dominion 2L at a rate of 0.3 to 0.6 fluid ounces of product per 1,000 square feet of treatment area.
