There seems little argument that Rishi Sunak has no idea how to appeal to ordinary voters, but Conservatives still seem to think that Johnson had an uncanny knack for reaching out to people. In reality, he never did. He carefully cultivated a fictional character and presented it to the nation. He worked with top strategists to achieve this, and simply followed their direction. But, when left to his own devices, Johnson actually annoys voters.
