Neo and Trinity are back again and they appear to have forgotten that this is all a simulation. They can be forgiven for that blindspot, however, because last we saw them they were very much not alive anymore. Now not only are they alive, but they have also aged appropriately. Apparently, the seventh go-around is not going to be the magic number and the Architect’s prediction about humans and the sustainability of the peace has come to pass. Among the familiar faces, there are some new faces but they appear to be filing old roles. While reboot literally comes from computers, referring to reloading a program from scratch after it’s gotten laggy or buggy, don’t call this movie a reboot even if it does reboot a number of key characters and themes from the original trilogy. Black cats carry the symbology on their back just as in the first one, but not as heavily as Lewis Carrol’s classic Alice in Wonderland with characters literally coming through a looking glass. Morpheus, who died off-screen in the Online video game, has been 3D printed into a new body and is back to his pill-pushing ways, breaking people out of their illusion of reality and showing them the stark reality of the dystopian cyberpunk future. Are the machines back in charge, or was it the humans that broke the peace? Let’s look at all the things that have recycled themselves from the original trilogy.
