Cheap gas won't last forever, and that won't bode well with the influx of SUVs and crossovers on the road. Thankfully, Toyota and Mazda are offering fuel-sipping options of their exceptionally popular compact CUVs — the RAV4 Hybrid, now in its second generation, and the new-for-2019 CX-5 Diesel.

The two go about their business in very different ways. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid looks more butch on the outside, it's roomier on the inside, extremely easy to live with, and the fuel economy is just incredible. Mazda, on the other hand, is billing the CX-5 Diesel as a "premium experience" — you can only get the diesel on the fully loaded Signature trim, but that comes at a whopping $5,000 uptick over the gas-powered CX-5 Signature, bringing the total to just under $46,000 as-tested.

That's a lot money, especially when you can get into a base RAV4 Hybrid for as little as $32,000. Our tester was a fairly well-equipped XSE with the Tech package, bringing the as-tested price tag to about $42,000.

But even then, $4,000 is a sizeable difference. Yeah, the CX-5's interior is excellent, but the diesel's fuel economy isn't as great as you'd think, especially if you do a lot of city driving. In this battle of fuel-sipping CUVs, hybrid reigns supreme, so check out the full review here: https://wp.me/p3LQCT-1Bf1
