00:00 Shaving Cream: Introduction

Shaving is something all of us have to do with varying levels of consistency. However, not very many of us put a lot of thought into the creams we use for a wet shave.

00:40 Why Should You Care?

Shaving cream is one of those consumer goods that doesn’t get a lot of attention as most of us often see it more as a means to an end than something we actively look forward to buying. There tends to be more engagement, for instance, in shaving soaps.

01:53 Defining "Cheap" and "Expensive"

This video will use “cheap” to refer to creams that are generally in the $1-$15 price range, and “expensive” to those that are generally in the $20-$50 range. Beyond pricetags and brand names, though, there are more specific ways to differentiate cheap and expensive shaving creams.

02:43 Application Method: Foams vs. Lathers

Cheap shaving creams, by and large, are dispensed as an aerosolized foam or gel, often from pressurized canisters. As opposed to expensive creams, which are generally a lipid-based (that is, fatty) cream that’s whipped by hand or brush into a lather.

Meanwhile, a higher quality shaving cream is more likely to be made from natural ingredients, or at least a higher proportion of them

06:18 Cost-per-Use

You might assume that cheaper shaving creams automatically have a better cost-per-use
But that’s not always the case! Higher-end shaving creams generally require less product per use especially when paired with the quality bristles of a good brush.

08:20 Skin Sensitivity

Most cheap shaving creams unfortunately have a “one size fits all” approach with no sensitivities taken into consideration. Quality creams know these are pain points for men. Expensive shaving creams will also look to add ingredients such as Aloe vera, Vitamin E, shea butter, primrose oil, or wheat germ.

10:04 Scents

Some men hate to have artificial smells on their face. Scents are a subjective area that will vary greatly depending on your own preferences

11:30 Getting that Barbershop Treatment

During the Golden Age of menswear, most men could wield a safety razor with ease, but a quality shave from a barber was often seen as a luxurious indulgence.

13:00 How to Spot Quality Shaving Cream

The most common ingredients here are coconut oil (also known as coconut acid) & glycerin. Another giveaway is that you’re unlikely to see alcohol (anything that ends in -ol) or petrochemical products in expensive creams.

14:52 Conclusion

In our opinion, high-quality shaving creams, which often cost more, offer a simple and easy way to upgrade your grooming routine.
