This has an AMG badge so we’ll start with the heart of the lion…the engine

What we have here is a 3 liter turbocharged straight 6

That engine is good for 362hp and 369lbft

But that’s not the whole story, there’s a 48V mild hybrid system like we tested inthe E53 the other week and the battery and electric motor can combine for another 21 hp for short bursts

In fact, this 43 variant is almost the same engine we tested, and really liked in the E53 - and theis AMG GT does come in a 53 trim with that engine. The difference here is this is the entry into the ange and what that means from an engine perspective is that this 43 motor is missing the electric supercharger

But it still feels plenty quick, i mean 0-60 is done in 4.8 seconds

so it’s not going to peel your face off, but in a 4500lb 4 door that’s not too bad

And that’s because you’re working with electric torque immediacy, 4Matic plus traction, and one of my favorite gearboxes

The 9 speed speedshift from Mercedes AMG is so much fun. It’s got so much drama, it’s quick, it makes good sound, I might like it more than the ZF units in the BMWs…

So from a powertrain perspective, especially around town this thing FEELS very special and I think you’ll start to notice that trend as we continue through our review of this car

So handling then, like I said this is a 4500 lb car with sub 400 hp

So what it needs to do is try to hide the weight

I think it does that on power, and when you get to a corner you have adaptive dampers to keep the weight from flopping over and understeering

You have a rear-biased 4matic plus system which wont have drift mode but will let you steer the rear with the throttle

And to be honest, the place I notice the weight most is in the brakes, but even then the pedal has good travel and good bite

The steering is a decent quickness, but not with too much feel. But again this is a Mercedes so there’s the other side of the badge we have to consider

Yes, the Mercedes part of the AMG. This was another thing we talk about a lot in the E53, and that’s smoothness

The nice thing about the mild hybrid system is that, when you want to relax it back it smooths off all the rough edges of things like your start/stop or gear changes, etc

The steering lightens up
The suspension softens back

And then what you have is a super refined, very quiet, incredibly luxurious ride that feels as special as this thing looks

I know it’s a cliche, but it does do the jekyll and hyde split personality thng very well and since it’s not the full bore 63 version it doesn’t have to be so aggressive so it’s more like a really good luxury car that CAN do sporty rather than a really aggressive sports car that CAN do luxury…and for me that’s a good balance

19 inch wheels
E-class chassis
Panamericana grille
Specific running lights
Massive powerdome hood
This is a big car, 5 inches longer than an e class
20 inch wheels (PS4S)
265 up front and 285 at back
Super fake fender vent
Similar taillights to the sportscar
Active spoiler
Push button
Opens at
Quad tips with a burble tune, subtle
Save the craziness for the 63

Dash design is very similar to the E53 we jus attested the other week with 12.3 inch screens
Of course, endlessly customizable with MBUX
Like 17 ways to interact with it
Seats look awesome
Center console is meant to look like a v8 bank
Exactly the same as the GT sportscar
Ambient lighting is top class
Fragrance
Pano roof, you can get a carbon roof
Rear seat is ok size - no middle back seat
Not huge
Issa hatch
But the seats don’t fold down
But they do with the exec package for 3500 dollars
