This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Toyota RAV4 compact SUV and the Mazda CX-5 compact utility. The Toyota RAV4 is the best selling passenger vehicle in North America and is sold as a gasoline model, hybrid and plug-in hybrid, we are focusing on the gas RAV4. Mazda is a much smaller car company and the sales of the CX-5 as much lower than the RAV4 but it is Mazda's best selling vehicle. The CX-5 is sold with a base 2.5L gas engine or a turbo version, we are focusing on the base model. The Toyota RAV4 is longer, wider and taller than the Mazda CX-5, but not by much. 1.8 inches longer, 0.5 inches wider and 0.8 inches taller. Even though the Toyota is longer, the CX-5 provides 1.9 inches more rear legroom than the RAV4 but equal front legroom. With the second row seats up, the RAV4 offers 6.4 cubic feet more cargo space and with all seats down 10.2 cubic feet. There is a turbo engine available on the CX-5 with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel, 250 horsepower & 320 lb-ft of torque on premium. In this review, we will be focusing on the base model engine. The RAV4 and CX-5 both come standard with cloth seats, heated front seats, Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The Toyota has a standard 7” touchscreen, the Mazda a 10.25” screen controlled with a centre console dial. One up from the base model on both is where you will find a heated leather wrapped steering wheel. On the Mazda, you also get driver seat memory, this feature is only available on the top trim of the Toyota. They both have similar features on the top trims like ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. The Toyota gets an 11-speaker JBL sound system, the Mazda a 10-speaker Bose system. The Mazda also gets beautiful Nappa leather trimmed seats on the top trim whereas the Toyota has mixed leather Softex seats.
