EPO 215 Manufacturing Processes I is taught by Professor Steffan Long as a machine shop class open to all engineering cadets. The current project involves creating a hammer.

Over the course of five weeks, cadets have 14 days in this three-hour lab to finish this project. The three components are the hammer head, stem, and handle. Cadets have previous class examples to follow. Once they finish one component, cadets must get approval from Professor Long to continue with the other components for the project.

“This is a unique hands-on lab experience for cadets to come in with an open mind. Their stress levels are different compared to their other courses. This is their space to express themselves, relax, and most importantly, have fun while learning,” said Professor Long.

Professor Long joined Cal Maritime in the fall of 2017. He has close to four decades of fabrication experience: design, machining, welding, and installation. He is continuously striving to improve cadet learning by improving process, equipment and facility. Learn more about our engineering major at www.csum.edu/engineering. ⚙️🥽🌊
