This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 BMW X1 premium small SUV. The small SUV category is the fastest growing segment of the auto industry worldwide. BMW was the first luxury brand to come out with a small SUV and this is the tail-end of this second generation model. The X1 has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8 speed automatic transmission, 228 horsepower and 258 lb-feet of torque. It goes 0-100 in 6.5 seconds. The X1 has an athletic design with the striking BMW kidney grille and bold bumpers, its slim, adaptive LED headlights give it a strong look. Our test model has the M Sport package for $1,950 CAD/$4,350 USD. It includes, black exterior accents, a high gloss black grille, 18” wheels, M Sport suspension, variable sport steering and the M Aerodynamics package with body colour front and rear bumpers and side skirts. You can add 19” wheels with this package for $500 CAD which our test model has. The BMW xDrive AWD system smoothly distributes drive power to the front and rear wheels for maximum traction and driving dynamics. The BMW X1 has a driver-focused cockpit, which shows off the X1’s sporty personality.
It comes standard with an 8.8 touchscreen with BMW’s iDrive system, heated leatherette front seats, brushed aluminum trim, leather sport steering wheel, power driver and passenger seats, driver seat memory and collision warning & lane departure warning. Unfortunately, blind spot monitoring and Android Auto are not available. A new X1 will be coming out next year and I am sure BMW will be adding these features. Our test model includes, the M Sport Package for $1,950 CAD and the Premium Package for $3,995 CAD. These packages include interior features like a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, comfort access, ambient lighting, sport seats and a M Sport steering wheel. There are different packages available in the US that you can add to the trim with a different price points such as the luxury and premium packages. JD Power gives the X1 an overall score of 74/100 and a quality and reliability score of 71/100. CarEdge states the BMW X1 will retain 50% of its value after 5 years. For fuel economy, the BMW X1 AWD gets 10.3L/100km, 23 MPG in the city and 7.7L/100km, 31 MPG on the highway. BMW offers a warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km and no charge scheduled maintenance
