(10) Today’s word is `a`ā.
`A`ā is a Hawaiian word for one of three basic types of flow lava.
It describes basaltic lava forming rough, jagged masses with a rubbly surface. Hiking across cooled `a`ā is harder than lava fields created by pāhoehoe - smooth, unbroken lava.
