This week we got our first look at a Tesla Model Y assembled and painted at Giga Austin. This new Model Y was built from a shipped body and components fed to the plant.

As Tesla nears completion of Giga Austin, getting the assembly lines set up is an arduous task. By making tweaks to the assembly line, and pilot production of the Model Y in advance of completion, Tesla is saving time by going through tweaks as much as possible up front.

In other news, Tesla has begun supplementing battery capacity with China made packs for the Tesla Model 3 SR+. With this, it appears that Tesla does not have the capacity to support Giga Austin with the new 4680 cells we have been hearing so much about.

It is now believed that the Giga Austin and Giga Berlin Model Y will not come with 4680 cells at first. This was based on the recent earnings call when Elon Musk stated that they had contingency plan in place to accommodate the 2170 cells in the beginning.

Of course once the 4680 cells come on line in volume, the new battery cells will find their way into the Model Y. But we are also hearing that the Cybertruck is also delayed, and the assumption is that is also based on delays with 4680 cell production.
