Are third party camera batteries any foo and are they safe?

When I started photography with my Canon 5dmk2 all those many years ago before finally upgrading to the Canon 5ds, everyone thought that using cheaper Neewer or wasabi power batteries might make you cameras explode. But thanks to Canons 70D and the Canon 80D, Canon 90d and Canon 6D series all using the same batterys with the LP E6, it means that extremely cheap third party options are readily available and extremely affordable.
