Carp and coarse fish have multiple layers above the muscle tissue, each layer plays a role in the protecting the fish. In this video we detail these layers which raises some interesting questions that will make you look at fish care under a different light.

Did you know fish scales could do that?

Did you know mucus was so important?

Did you know why stress and mouth damage could be so closely related?

One thing I didn't mention in this video was the influence of water temperature. The warmer the water the responsive the specific immune system will be, the more active bacteria and virus are and the more susceptible to stress the fish are. So everything is amplified in terms of vulnerability, although the non specific immune system (mucus) is consistent in its efficiency providing the fish is healthy enough to produce mucus. I therefore believe protecting this mucus layer should be a much higher priority for anglers in order to protect the health of the fish.
