Muslims often say that once the soul enters into the embryo or fetus, abortion is forbidden except in specific circumstances (e.g) if the mother's life is in danger. So what is the soul? Dr. Shabir Ally says that the Quran doesn't say much about what the soul is, and neither does not tell us when the soul is breathed into our bodies. He says it is possible to think of the soul as an emergent property; it develops with the developing fetus as it grows a brain and gains consciousness.
