What’s the criminal psychology of a pathological liar?

As a jury of Alex Murdaugh’s peers have made clear Alex lied constantly. He not only lied to police the night his youngest son and wife were murdered and lied to his clients to steal millions of dollars from them, but he also lied constantly on the witness stand effectively committing perjury when he testified in his murder trial claiming complete innocence that he had no idea who could have murdered his family. Although Alex’s attorneys were happy to present a bogus story to the jury with virtually no evidence that they weren’t killed by Alex, who’s 6’4”, but instead killed by a group of 11-year-olds who were 5’2”. Anyway, Alex Murdaugh is clearly a pathological liar, but what is psychologically causing him to do that?

Pseudologia fantastica, or more commonly known as pathological lying, is a very complex behavior with a variety of underlying causes. Here are some of the reasons why people become pathological liars and see which ones you think best suit Alex Murdaugh.
