Lithium batteries are used in electric vehicles, and when EVs are involved in collisions, stored energy in the battery can remain energized for hours or even days. Unfortunately, the technology is so new that first responders do not have adequate training or tools to assess risk, deenergize the battery, and prevent reignition.

With the number of energy storage systems worldwide expected to rise dramatically in the near future, firefighters and other rescue personnel are looking for practical ways of safely dealing with the stranded energy issue.
