O Sacred Head, Surrounded was originally written as a poem titled O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (or Salve Mundi Salutare) by the theologian and mystic Bernard of Clairvaux. It was then turned to a meditative hymn by Hans Leo Hassler, with harmony by J.S Bach.

As we ponder and meditate on the lyrics this Good Friday, we remember the pain and agony that Jesus went through; being sent to die for us to pay the price for our sins. We also remember how much He loved us, to be able to endure such treatment and shame; giving up everything for us.

We are invited to reflect and remember His sacrifice for us in order for us to have a place in heaven with Him for eternal life.

O Sacred Head, surrounded By crown of piercing thorn!
O bleeding Head, so wounded, Reviled and put to scorn!
No comeliness or beauty Thy wounded face betrays,
Yet angel hosts adore thee And tremble as they gaze.

O Jesus, we adore thee, Upon the cross our King!
We humbly bow before thee, And of thy vict’ry sing!
Thy cross is our salvation, Our hope from day to day,
Our peace and consolation when life shall fade away.
